On October 27th, 2018, during Shabbat morning services, a white supremacist entered the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, saying “all Jews must die.” He then murdered 11 innocent people — simply because they were Jewish. This was the deadliest attack on Jews in US history.

We are devastated over this senseless act of domestic terror. Our hearts break for the families of those killed and injured at the Tree of Life Synagogue, and for the entire Jewish community of Pittsburgh.

As Martin Niemöller’s famous poem reminds us, hate toward one group invariably leads to hate toward another:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Whether you are Jewish, a believer in any of the other faiths in the world, or simply a human being who is horrified by these terrible, violent acts, it is incumbent upon all of us to stand together in sorrow, remembrance, tolerance, and love.
