According to recent reports, over half a million Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh since the latest round of violence broke out in August in the Rakhine State. The Burmese military and their associates are currently engaged in so-called “clearance operations,” which the U.N. Secretary General and the High Commission for Human Rights have labeled “ethnic cleansing.”
As a global power, the U.S. has an obligation to act and use diplomatic pressure against these atrocities. We are petitioning Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to act in defense of the Rohingya people.
We, the undersigned, are petitioning Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to take diplomatic action aimed at quelling the violence and ending discrimination against the Rohingya, through the use of diplomatic pressures and concrete penalties targeting Burmese security forces, as well as Myanmar’s political leadership, including State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, who must publicly intervene to end the crisis.
As Americans committed to fighting discrimination and bias, we cannot stand by while inhumane crimes are being committed against Rohingya Muslims on a basis of their ethnicity and religion.
Absent significant international pressure, violence against Rohingya will only worsen in the coming weeks and months. Secretary Tillerson, we implore you to act decisively against the mounting violence and provide much-needed assistance to the Rohingya.
